Cardiff Racing represents Cardiff University at the Formula Student Competition, attending the UK Event every year. However this year will see Cardiff Racing also travelling across Europe to see what it will hold.. The team consists of predominantly mechanical engineering students from first year undergraduates right up to PhD students.

Cardiff Racing are a formula student team made up from engineering students at Cardiff University, every year we design and build a single seater race car to enter into the IMechE Formula Student competition. The team is formed by fourth year students who have chosen projects related to the car and also from volunteers from all years. We are a close knit team and our members all contribute a wide range of useful skills. We like to encourage new members to join our team and pride ourselves on the excellent levels of team work, professionalism and atmosphere that are shown year upon year.
Here at Cardiff Racing, we are a team formed of engineering students at all levels of training and to organise ourselves we hold regular meetings where we can discuss the car, arrange maintenance sessions or discuss marketing. The team has its own marketing division, some of who's responsibilities are to arrange sponsorships and to oversee publicity. We also work to strengthen team spirit. We organise regular socials (often motor sport related) to encourage team members to get to know each other.
Cardiff University is part of the GE3 group. This group comprises of 74 engineering universities that believe in international educational experiences. The group support students to travel between member universities to spend a semester studying abroad.
Formula Student is an international competition and through the GE3 Cardiff Racing were able to meet up with two other member universities whilst away competing in Europe in the summer of 2015.
See our Europe Tour Newsletter below for a more in depth description of Cardiff Racings experience with RWTH Aachen and UAS Munich.
The event is what months of design, building, and refinement of the Formula Student car leads up to. Cardiff Racing aims its efforts at the Formula Student UK event that attracted over 2000 students to compete last year. The Formula Student UK 2017 event was held at Silverstone Circuit between the 20th - 23rd July. Over the couse of these few short days the cars (and teams) were put through their paces and tested to the limita to find the best overall package of acceleration, handling, design, and reliability and economy.
In the 19th year of FSUK Cardiff Racing made history and became the first UK team to win the prestigeous event, made even more special as it also marked the 40th anniversary of Tom Pryce's passing, still the only Welshman to race in Formula 1.
The tests that the cars go through are split into two sections; static and dynamic. The static events are judged on cost of the car, presentation and design. This aims to judge the team efforts and abilities more than the cars performance. The dynamic events consist of a figure of eight skid pan trial, acceleration and sprint events, and finally the endurance event. The events prove the cars performance, reliability and economy. Each team is given a score for each event that is then totalled to give them a final score and a ranking for the event.
